Urban Initiative Program
Along with organizing our yearly invitational tournament, Brown Science Olympiad (BSO) strives to support local Rhode Island Science Olympiad teams through our outreach mission. We believe time intermittently in between the start of the Science Olympiad season and attending tournaments is crucial to team growth and students’ development of science skills. Currently, our support takes the form of our Urban Initiative Program (UIP), which functions to mentor the Science Olympiad teams at Classical High School and Hope High School, both located in Providence, Rhode Island. The UIP working group is also committed to creating a bank of questions that teams, both in Rhode Island and across the country, can use to study and practice science.
RI Outreach
In addition to the UIP, we have developed an educational packet intended for the coaches and students of local teams to act as a reference for creating and maintaining a Science Olympiad team. This packet, How to Compete in Science Olympiad: A guide for Rhode Island schools, was created by the Science Olympiad alumni of BSO that have a wealth of experience in competition and tournament administration. It includes introductory information about the program, ideas for recruiting students, tips on club structure, and links to resources. We hope this packet will serve as a helpful resource for both existing teams and schools that do not yet have a Science Olympiad team.
Connect with Us!
BSO is dedicated to sending out informational resources such as this outreach packet as well as other supplemental tournament resources, such as workshops for coaches and teams. An important aspect of this to BSO is to stay connected! If you would like access to these kinds of resources and otherwise communicate with BSO, please fill out the below form so that we have your contact information and can be put on our mailing list. Communication allows BSO to understand what kind of assistance teams need most, so your feedback and information is valuable to us.
